Purpose of the Role
The Lead – Electrical will be responsible for the complete electrical engineering, design review, execution, commissioning, and handover of electrical systems for a large-scale Aluminium Smelter project. The role involves managing electrical engineering activities from concept development through commissioning while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, cost, and schedule requirements.
Job Responsibilities (KRA)
Project Engineering & Design
- Lead electrical engineering activities for Greenfield/Brownfield Aluminium Smelter projects.
- Review and approve electrical design packages prepared by consultants and EPC contractors.
- Ensure compliance with relevant IEC, IS, IEEE, NFPA, and utility standards.
- Review Single Line Diagrams (SLD), Load Lists, Protection Philosophy, Earthing & Lightning Protection systems, Cable Schedules, and Electrical Layouts.
- Coordinate electrical interfaces with Process, Mechanical, Civil, Instrumentation, and Utility teams.
Power Distribution & Substation Systems
- Lead design and execution of:
- EHV/HV/MV substations (220kV/132kV/33kV/11kV)
- GIS/AIS substations
- Power transformers and rectifier transformers
- Switchgear and MCC systems
- Busbar systems
- Power factor correction systems
- Emergency and backup power systems
- Ensure integration of captive power plant/grid connectivity with smelter operations.
Smelter-Specific Electrical Systems
- Manage electrical systems associated with:
- Potline and Reduction Plant
- Rectifier Stations
- Carbon Plant
- Casthouse
- Alumina Handling System
- Raw Material Handling System
- Utility and Auxiliary Systems
- Review rectifier technology and high-current DC distribution systems.
Project Execution
- Monitor project progress against schedule and budget.
- Review EPC contractor deliverables and construction methodologies.
- Ensure timely procurement and delivery of electrical equipment.
- Conduct technical bid evaluations and vendor assessments.
- Participate in FAT, SAT, and equipment inspections.
Construction & Commissioning
- Supervise installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Ensure adherence to project quality plans and electrical safety standards.
- Coordinate energization activities and system integration testing.
- Lead troubleshooting during commissioning and startup phases.
- Ensure successful project handover to operations.
Stakeholder Management
- Coordinate with technology licensors, consultants, EPC contractors, utility providers, and government authorities.
- Provide technical guidance to project teams and contractors.
- Present project status and technical reports to senior management.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety regulations and project HSE requirements.
- Conduct electrical risk assessments and hazard reviews.
- Support implementation of Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) and electrical safety procedures.

Qualification: BE/ B.Tech in Electrical Engineering
Experience: 17+ Years
